One year on, Europe’s liberals remain steadfast in their support to Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy against Putin’s unprovoked military aggression.
We continue to call for an immediate end to the violence and for Russian troops to withdraw from all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea. We also urge our partners to maintain, and if required to step up, their current military and financial support to Ukraine’s government and people.
"The war in Ukraine is not just a conflict between two countries – it is a battle between democracy and autocracy, between freedom and brutality. The ALDE Party stands on the side of democracy, and we will do everything in our power to support Ukraine and its people in this fight," says ALDE Party co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk.
"As the European political home of President Zelenskyy, the ALDE Party stands with Ukraine in this crucial moment. We will support Ukrainians for as long as it takes, and we are committed to defending their right to freedom and democracy," says ALDE Party co-President Timmy Dooley.
We stand as resolutely with the Ukrainian people as we did on the first day of the war and will do so for as long as it takes for Putin to end the hostilities and to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty in full.
We are proud that our Prime Ministers, Commissioners and national party leaders have been staunch supporters of Ukraine in Europe, urging tougher sanctions on Russia and more defence support for the Ukrainian freedom fighters. We will also continue to work with our Ukrainian member parties in order to be a strong voice for Ukraine in Europe and the world.
While nothing compares to the sacrifices made by Ukrainians, we applaud the solidarity shown by European citizens.
Europe’s liberals will always stand for democracy and human rights for all, including the people of Russia who have seen their own rights and freedoms suppressed in conjunction with Putin’s failed war efforts.
