Prime Ministers discuss 2019 European elections

At the invitation of ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP and Guy Verhofstadt MEP, leader of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament; liberal Prime Ministers and European Commissioners met at the Sofitel Hotel in Brussels on Friday 23 February ahead of the Informal meeting of the 27 heads of state or government of the same day.

Crucial topics for the future of Europe were discussed concerning the 2019 European Parliament elections, including the composition of the European Parliament post-2019, transnational lists and the appointment of top EU positions and the lead candidate process.

The evening before the Council meeting, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel invited twelve heads of state and government for an informal dinner at the Val-Duchesse Château in Brussels. The dinner, gathering leaders from different parts of Europe and different political leanings, was an opportunity for the leaders present to have a more free and direct exchange than during the usual summits.
