The ALDE Gender Equality Network was launched in March 2013 and focuses on gender equality and the promotion of women’s rights to ensure full participation as equal partners in economic, social and political life. The network is open to all European liberals that are interested in making a difference. This breakfast seminar offers the opportunity for member parties and associated members of the ALDE Party to learn more and join forces in a shared endeavor for gender equality.

Seminar: European Citizenship

Event organised by LYMEC, D66 and VVD

2013 is the European year of citizens, dedicated to the rights that come with EU citizenship. In this fringe meeting we will discuss these rights and civil liberties, how they are at the heart of the European project and how they improve the lives of European citizens on a daily basis. Another aspect of citizenship to be discussed will be the issue of a common European identity shared by the individual citizens of the member states. How do we envisage a common identity? Is identity given shape ‘top-down’ or ‘bottom-up’? How do liberal values compare to the promotion of a common European identity? Speakers from Lymec, VVD and D66 will discuss their perspectives on European citizenship and identity. You are very welcome to join the discussion!

Speaker: Robert Schliessler, president of the thematic group on Europe and the EU within D66

Other speakers to be announced

Location: Restaurant 1
Time: 13:00-14:30

Seminar: The 28th EU member state - the case of Croatia

After 12 years of different phases of negotiations for the EU accession Croatia is just few months away from the full EU membership on 1. July 2013. Entering the Union as it's 28th member state, Croatia is fully prepared to take over the responsibilities and opportunities inside the Union. How has the country evolved during the accession negotiations, what are the benefits of its accession to the Union and how will Croatia position itself on the table of 28? The seminar will present in depth the case of the ALDE Council host country, Croatia.

Time: 13:00-14:30

Discussion: Working group on draft electoral manifesto

Event organised by the ALDE Party Secretariat

The main theme of the ALDE Party Congress 2013 will be the adoption of an electoral manifesto for the European Parliament elections in 2014. The 2014 campaign manifesto will focus on a selected number of key issues. This might better allow member parties to complement their own platforms with a common European liberal manifesto highlighting the added European liberal value and underlining the common causes of Liberal Democrats across Europe.

In order to maximise the time for discussion on our common key issues in Pula, this working group will allow for a first exchange of views on what are the top liberal priorities and explore common ground. It is intended to continue the discussion during the actual council meeting in the afternoon.

Following the meeting in Pula, an online platform will be launched to continue the discussions until a formal draft manifesto will be circulated in accordance with the ALDE Party’s internal regulations.

Chair: Sir Graham Watson MEP, ALDE Party President

Location: Ulika
Time: 12:00-13:00

Time: 09:30-11:00

Seminar: EU enlargement and populism on the Western Balkan

Event organised by FNF Western Balkans and FNF Regional EINA office

EU enlargement triggers populist movements among current and future EU member states. The reasons are obvious: the vision of an EU without borders, with free movement of labour and competition poses a threat to narrow-minded nationalist politicians who claim to defend national interests but rightfully fear to lose their grip on power. It is the Liberals who can best challenge the populists with their vision of the EU. Yet still it is necessary to review arguments and better understand populist ideas and thinking. This panel seeks to get a glimpse on the situation in some of the Western Balkan countries. Insights from Greece and Croatia shall offer a broader picture of the various forms of populism in the region in view of evaluating common liberal approaches on this topic.

Chair: Charles du Vinage, FNF Western Balkans

Speakers: Jozo Rados, HNS, Boris Miletic, IDS, Cedomir Jovanovic, LDP (TBC), Makis Spyratos, Liberal Alliance "Fileleftheri Symmakhia"

Location: Bianca Istriana
Time: 09:30-11:00

The seminar is part of the ELF multi-annual project “Liberal Answers to Modern Migration and Integration Challenges in Western Europe”.
