Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal was elected as the new leader of Eesti Reformierakond at a party Congress on 8 September.
Michal was sworn in as Prime Minister in July after previous leader Kaja Kallas left to become the European Union’s next candidate for the role of High Representative for Foreign Affairs (HR/VP).
After receiving over 80% of votes from party members, Michal stressed his commitment to keep the party’s team spirit created on the basis of shared values.
"We are unique in Estonian politics. Our working culture holds us together but does not leave any difficult question unanswered,” said Michal.
"We have a plan on how to fix things in Estonia. This journey will be full of twists and turns. Together, with our good women and men from all over Estonia, we can do it. We will always work for a better future, even in a difficult moment.”
"Kristen has served as the party's General Secretary, has successfully led the Tallinn team, has been a minister in several governments, and has been a member of the Riigikogu for five terms. [He] has the skills and knowledge to deal successfully with both the economic challenges and the complexities of running a country," added the party’s Secretary General Timo Suslov.
During the Congress, members also elected current Mayor of Tartu Urmas Klaas as the new chair of the party board, as well as Irina Talviste as the new chair of the board of local government leaders.
