Renew Europe welcomed the approval of a European Union certification framework for carbon removals by the European Parliament’s Plenary session.
The framework sets out EU-wide rules for measuring the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere aiming to boost innovative carbon removal technologies, carbon storage in products and sustainable carbon farming solutions.
While the EU’s goal of becoming climate neutral primarily requires immediate emissions reductions, both permanent and temporary carbon removals are complementary in achieving the EU's climate goals.
Establishing a robust certification framework for CO2 removals ensures that carbon removals are applied responsibly and therefore effectively used across the EU to halt climate disruption.
“Today, we take a large step towards a climate neutral Europe. With this proposal, we take the first steps to drastically increase the technical carbon sinks as well as to kick-start carbon farming in Europe,” said Emma Wiesner MEP from ALDE Party member Centerpartiet in Sweden.
