Renew Europe welcomes scrapping of anti-LGBT resolution by Polish region

Renew Europe welcomes the news that the Polish region of Swietokrzyskie has scrapped their shameful anti-LGBTIQ+ motion and is calling on others to follow. There can be no EU taxpayer subsidies for those who undermine fundamental European values.

Pierre Karleskind MEP (LREM, FR), the initiator of the European Parliament's resolution declaring the EU an 'LGBTIQ Freedom Zone', said:

"This is a positive first step: the European Parliament has found a way to force the hand of populists who want to impose their views in this region. Polish society is much more open than PiS would have people believe. Renew Europe will continue to stand by those who want to keep European values alive!"

The scrapping of this motion is the result of months of constant pressure from Renew Europe, and the Group calls on other Polish regions to follow. Homophobia and transphobia do not have a place in Europe, and liberals will continue to raise their voices until all regions of Poland have repealed their so-called "LGBT free zones".

Sophie in' t Veld MEP (D66, NL), Coordinator in the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties and Rapporteur on the European Parliament's resolution LGBTIQ Freedom Zone resolution, concluded:

"Brave Poles have resisted the LGBTI-free zones with fervour. It was the right call for the European Commission to support them in this struggle. When the rights of EU citizens are trampled by their own governments, the EU should apply pressure - not shy away from it."
