During its meeting on Monday 9 November, the ALDE Party Bureau adopted the following statement:
“ALDE Party has always been outspoken against discrimination, among others, on the basis of gender and sexual orientation. This was affirmed in our resolution on LGBTI Rights adopted at the 2012 Congress in Dublin and most recently reaffirmed in our 2019 European Election Manifesto.
In the case of Estonia, the Registered Partnership Act and subsequent court rulings have made it possible for a number of rights for same-sex couples to be recognised.
The Bureau of ALDE Party calls on its member parties in Estonia to at a minimum defend and protect this status quo at the forthcoming Constitutional referendum, and to not prevent the option of introducing legislation to recognise same sex-marriage in the future.”
