The ALDE Party Bureau, as well as the European liberal family, stand united today in condemning in the strongest possible terms the unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine who are being punished for being a sovereign, democratic and pro-European country. In taking this unprovoked action, Putin has flagrantly and willingly violated international law, including the United Nations charter and its international commitments. Today is a very dark day in our European history.
We call the European Union and its leaders to strongly respond by imposing further massive sanctions on the Russian Federation, in particular its leadership. We also call on the European community to prepare a humanitarian aid package and provide all the support it can to the democratically-elected government of Ukraine and its citizens who are being dragged into this unprovoked and futile war.
