On 16 July, Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament gave its full support to the election of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission.
The Group welcomes the result which gives her a clear mandate to renew Europe. Their decision to support Ursula von der Leyen was conditional on an ambitious agenda for rule of law, climate, digitalisation and convergence between East and West.
Following the vote, Renew Europe President, Dacian Cioloș, said:
“I want to congratulate Ms. von der Leyen on her election. It is a great day for Europe to have a woman elected to lead the European Commission. We are ready to work with her on the political priorities Renew Europe negotiated with her. As a Group, Renew Europe will continue the dialogue in a constructive and transparent way in order to deliver on what we have promised to our voters: a Europe that works and is closer to its citizens.”
He continued:
“For the first time ever, a deep discussion took place between the President-Designate and the key political groups in the Parliament to set out the political agenda for the next 5 years including Conference on the future of Europe. Renew Europe will follow very closely the implementation of our political agenda, working with President von der Leyen and with Margrethe Vestager, for whom we succeeded to secure a strong position in the College.”
