Verhofstadt urges to preserve EU unity amid latest Brexit delay

In his European Parliament plenary speech on 17 April, ALDE Group leader Guy Verhofstadt addressed European Council President Donald Tusk and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to warn them of the consequences of the previous week's decision to extend the Brexit deadline up to 31 October.

"Until now, the European Union has kept a remarkable unity – not only among the 27 Member States, but also between Council, Parliament and Commission but this unity is now at risk," Verhofstadt said. According to him, the new extension only prolongs the indecision, imports more uncertainty into the Union and it may also poison the upcoming European elections.
