On 11 April, Team Europe’s Margrethe Vestager, EU Commissioner for Competition, joined the Democracy Alive Festival in Texel, the Netherlands, for ‘Talking Europe’ series debate with the Euronews.
Speaking of topics heavily linked to Europe’s competitive edge, such as digitalisation, taxation and regulations for doing business in Europe, Vestager highlighted the bloc’s approach:
“Europe is a place where it’s great to do business. Everyone is welcome. But you have to play by the European rules,” Vestager said, and continued, “We live in a Union where there is a very fundamental respect for the authorities, institutions and the rule of law.”
Diversity, gender equality and social inequalities were also widely discussed during the debate. Vestager highlighted the importance of equality as a starting point as well as the role acquiring and analysing data plays in promoting change.
On the approaching European elections and possible foreign interference, Vestager was optimistic of the positive steps Europe has taken and the increased awareness around the issue: “When you are better prepared for something that seems scary, then you can actually deal with it.”
