With parliamentary elections approaching on 24 May, ALDE Party member Democratic Party (DEPA) in Cyprus presented its 56 candidates last week alongside its campaign slogan: "We continue wisely, We decide responsibly."

The elections come as Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU, placing the country at the centre of key EU legislative debates on security, energy and digital policy.

A major concern for liberals in Cyprus is the high levels of voter non-registration among youth, which is highest among citizens born after 1995, with almost 40% unregistered. This may threaten to skew electoral results and fuel protest votes in favour of far-right populists.

With rapid economic, social and geopolitical changes fuelling public anxiety, many Cypriots seek a refresh. DEPA’s campaign is offering just that, prioritising young voters and renewal at the centre of its campaign.

Party leader Marios Garoyian delivered a speech expressing his pride in the quality of candidates selected. He stressed the importance of youth and renewal in the election efforts, as well as political honesty and accountability:

“Let us not repeat outdated behaviours, practices and mindsets. Let's start now to build tomorrow's prosperity on stronger foundations, let's open new paths to the future. We must make the parliamentary elections of 24 May a milestone of a new era, a new beginning, a new perspective.
"A ballot that combines the knowledge and experience of those who are older with the freshness and spontaneity of the new generation. With the participation of 16 women and presence in all provinces, it reflects the diversity and dynamics of our ballot.”

The party confirmed its intent last week to play a more robust role in the new House of Representatives, and their selection of candidates displays a conscious choice to include individuals from all over Cyprus. The new group creatively bridges generations and backgrounds, capturing the needs of a modern Cypriot society.

Party Vice-President and head of the election campaign, Yiannos Lakkotrypis, highlighted that in a period in which populism is poisoning the public debate, Cypriot liberals are choosing the path of seriousness and responsibility.

The elections will set the stage for the Presidential Elections in 2028. Heading into a closely watched parliamentary election, DEPA will focus on re-engaging younger voters and countering rising populism in a fluid and unpredictable political landscape.
