As Sweden heads to the polls on Sunday, ALDE Party member Liberalerna is looking back on four years of liberal reform and making the case for more.
The party points to what it describes as the most liberal government in modern Swedish history, with reforms aimed at strengthening freedom, democracy and knowledge, while giving people greater power to shape their own lives.
Party leader Simona Mohamsson delivered an election speech, saying: “Liberalerna’s promise to you is this: We put school first and want to increase freedom in your everyday life. We want Sweden to be richer and freer.”
After four years in government, their reforms have touched on some of the biggest questions facing Sweden. The country joined NATO, work on new nuclear power began and the independence of the courts was strengthened, while abortion rights were constitutionally protected.
Liberal reform has also reached everyday life, from allowing homosexual men to donate blood to banning so-called “virginity checks” and simplifying rules for companies. Liberalerna also points to stronger accountability for civil servants and the removal of rules that once limited people’s freedom.
Now, the party wants to keep that momentum going. Its election campaign puts schools first, alongside a simpler everyday life and a stronger economy.
For Liberalerna, knowledge is one of the most powerful ways to open doors. The party wants continued investment in schools and a stronger focus on learning, giving more people the chance to shape their own future.
Freedom also depends on feeling safe. Liberalerna sees the fight against crime as a fight for freedom itself, arguing that children should be able to grow up safely and communities should be free from crime.
And when it comes to the economy, the party wants to give people more power over their own lives by making work, entrepreneurship and new ideas pay off. A growing economy and more resources create more opportunities.
The vision extends beyond Sweden’s borders too. Liberalerna wants to protect the country’s openness to the world, free trade and international connections, especially as protectionism is on the rise.
After four years in government, Liberalerna is now looking forward to the results on Sunday as they push for more opportunities and freedom in the future.
