LIBSEEN Statement: No place for Genocide Glorification in the Balkans

The Liberal South East European Network (LIBSEEN) strongly condemns the dangerous surge of nationalist revisionism, war criminal glorification and political intimidation across the Western Balkans following the death of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić. 

Liberals have historically led the fight against ethnic division, war and xenophobia in the region. The judicial facts surrounding genocide, crimes against humanity and the destruction of human lives are definitive and non-negotiable. Attempts to rewrite history threaten the peace, stability and European future of the entire region. 

𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑁𝑎𝑠̌𝑎 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑘𝑎 

LIBSEEN firmly rejects the provocative actions of nationalist figures, including Milorad Dodik, who seek to turn Mladić’s death into a campaign tool for ethnic division and anti-state rhetoric. As Bosnia and Herzegovina approaches critical elections, LIBSEEN expresses full support for our sister party, Naša stranka. 

Naša Stranka remains the vital liberal force fighting for a functional, multi-ethnic state, rule of law and genuine European integration. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Naša Stranka as they lead the charge against corrupt nationalism and champion a modern, united Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

𝑆𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑃𝑆𝐺 𝐴𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑡 𝑁𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 

LIBSEEN extends unyielding solidarity to the Movement of Free Citizens (Pokret slobodnih građana - PSG) in Serbia. PSG members face violent threats, including threats of sexual assault, simply for stating judicial truth and opposing the normalisation of war crimes. 

Using threats of violence to silence political dissent is an unacceptable authoritarian tactic. Serbian law enforcement must immediately identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for these cowardly acts. 

LIBSEEN demands urgent state protection for PSG members and all political actors standing against violence and threats in Serbia. We call for strong European and regional backing for Naša Stranka as it offers a progressive, anti-nationalist vision for citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina ahead of the upcoming elections. 

As liberals we stand firm for absolute enforcement of legal bans on genocide denial, historical revisionism, and the public honouring of convicted war criminals across the region.
