The ALDE Party alongside its liberal partners has released a statement condemning the Iranian regime's crackdwon and calls for sanctions to be put in place.
Liberal International Human Rights Committee, ALDE Party, LYMEC and IFLRY strongly condemns the ongoing crackdown by the Iranian regime, marked by mass killings, arbitrary arrests and widespread repression aimed at silencing protests.
The use of lethal force against civilian and systematic targeting of activists, journalists, students and human rights defenders represent serious violations of fundamental human rights and international law.
The death toll from the crackdown is feared to have reached thousands as reports from hospitals come out. Reportedly, Efran Sultani, a 26-year-old activist, is under the imminent threat of execution. Many others in jail are facing the same.
According to the Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) at least 648 protesters, including nine children, have been killed in just over two weeks, with thousands injured and more than 10,000 arbitrarily detained amid a near-total internet blackout for more than 10 hours. Protesters are being branded “enemies of God” and “terrorists,” charges that carry the death penalty, and are being subjected to summary trials without legal representation.
Credible reports suggest that executions may already be imminent, raising grave fears of mass and extrajudicial killings. These actions may amount to crimes against humanity and demand an urgent and decisive international response under the Responsibility to Protect.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with the courageous activists and citizens of Iran who continue to protest despite facing extraordinary risks to their lives and freedom. We honour the immense sacrifices made by those who have lost their lives and by families who continue to suffer under constant threat and intimidation. Their struggle represents a profound demand for a future rooted in justice, democracy, and respect for human dignity.
We urge the international community, UN Security Council and UN Human Rights Council to take concrete action to address the atrocities committed by the Iranian regime; and call for additional, stricter, sanctions against the Iranian regime where possible, including visa bans and asset freezes against all responsible regime actors, as well as a prohibition on financial transfers to or from the Iranian regime.
Silence and inaction only enable further violations.
