Ciudadanos announce EU lead candidate

On 22 April, ALDE Party member Ciudadanos in Spain announced Jordi Cañas MEP as the party’s lead candidate for the European elections in June.

Cañas, who was elected to the European Parliament in 2019, is Ciudadanos’ current political spokesperson and head of delegation in Brussels.

"I am very proud to lead the only ballot that Spaniards will be able to choose on 9 June with the certainty that they will not be deceived. Ciudadanos will stop the Sánchez-Puigdemont tandem also from Europe, where we know well the work that needs to be done", said Cañas.

"We have a lot of work to do, we have experience and the backing of the European liberal family, in which it is essential that Spain continues to have a delegation with clear ideas.”

Cañas has been a key part of Renew Europe’s promotion of initiatives around the defence of freedom and equality in Catalonia in the European Parliament and other institutions.

He has also played an important role in favour of European involvement in Latin America as First Vice-President of the EU-Eurolat Parliamentary Assembly.

The European elections in Spain are scheduled to take place on 9 June, as citizens will head to the polls to elect 61 MEPs.
