ALDE and EPP join forces to call on EU institutions to re-evaluate EU-Moldova Association Agreement following democratic setback
With regards to the situation in the Republic of Moldova, the European People’s Party (EPP) President, Joseph Daul, together with the President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), Hans van Baalen, have today made a joint statement:“It is with increasing concern that the ALDE Party and the European People’s Party (EPP) continue to observe the deterioration of the rule of law and democratic standards in the Republic of Moldova. Instead of seeking to advance the country and its people along the road to prosperity, the Democratic Party (PDM), together with the Socialists (PSRM), spearheaded by their leader Plahotniuc, have chosen to strengthen autocracy.”
Liberal International President barred from meeting Philippines political prisoner
Almost 5 months after Philippine Liberal Senator Leila de Lima – an outspoken critic of President Rodrigo Duterte – was arrested in the Philippines, the President of Liberal International, Juli Minoves, was arbitrarily barred from meeting face-to-face with the human rights champion while Chair of Liberal International’s Human Rights Committee and ALDE Party Vice President, Markus Loening, was granted access and a meeting at the site of her incarceration.
ALDE-CoR focuses on energy efficiency
Ahead of last week's Committee of the Regions summer plenary session, ALDE-CoR member Michiel Rijsberman issued an opinion stating that the EU should be more ambitious in terms of energy efficiency: "A higher energy saving target would reduce the EU’s gas import and create additional jobs in Europe."
SFP and Keskusta take stage at SuomiAreena
Inspired by the Almedalen Week in Sweden, Finnish political parties and citizens came together in the city of Pori for SuomiAreena. Finnish ALDE Party members Suomen Keskusta, led by Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä, and Svenska Folkpartiet, led by Anna-Maja Henriksson, actively participated in the event.
