Renew Europe warmly congratulated Mark Carney, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, on his victory in the Canadian federal elections.

In a letter sent on 29 April, Renew Europe President Valérie Hayer MEP praised Carney’s leadership and the trust placed in him by Canadians as a powerful affirmation of liberal democratic values.

"Mark Carney’s victory demonstrates that openness, innovation, democracy and a rules-based international order continue to offer a compelling vision for the future. This election result shows there is scope for deeper EU-Canada relations. The Liberal and Democrat family must be at the heart of efforts to build a new global alliance of democracies," said Hayer.

The letter welcomes Carney’s commitment to strengthening Canada's ties with reliable allies, particularly the EU, and noted the growing positive perceptions of the EU among Canadians as a strong foundation for deeper relations.

Renew Europe particularly welcomes reports of enhanced military-industrial cooperation between the EU and Canada, underlining the need to reinforce democratic resilience, security, and strategic autonomy in a changing world.

Cynthia Ní Mhurchú MEP, member of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Canada, welcomed the election result and called for enhanced dialogue with Canada.

"Canada and the European Union are natural allies in defending democracy, prosperity and the rule of law. We want to work hand in hand with Prime Minister Carney’s government to build a transatlantic partnership that is fit for the future and delivers for all our citizens,” said Ní Mhurchú.

Looking to the future, Renew Europe expressed its desire to work closely with Carney’s government in areas such as clean technology and climate innovation, digital standards and AI governance, strategic trade resilience, and the defence of democratic institutions.
