Statement of the ALDE Party Bureau: marking four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine
Four years ago, Russia launched its brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine - a direct attack on freedom, democracy and the European security order.
Today we want to honour the extraordinary courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people, who under continued and relentless assault and through colder winters and dark days, have defended their homes, their sovereignty, their freedoms, liberal values, and their democratic European future with admirable strength and dignity.
Ukraine’s fight is our fight.
We European Liberals and Democrats reaffirm our unwavering support for the country — politically, financially and humanitarianly. We also reaffirm our strong commitment to sustained military support for Ukraine, recognising that Ukraine’s ability to defend itself is essential for the security of Europe as a whole. We stood with Ukraine since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and we will stand with Ukraine now for as long as it takes.
All deported Ukrainian children must be returned immediately, with full support for their safe comeback home.
Any just and lasting peace must fully respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.
We support Ukraine’s irreversible path towards membership in the European Union and commend the reforms undertaken under extremely difficult wartime conditions. Ukraine belongs to the European family.
Europe must stand strong and not falter. Solidarity is not optional - it is a responsibility
