ALDE Party is deeply concerned about the politicisation of the judiciary in Spain, which jeopardises its independence and the separation of powers.

We join our member party Ciudadanos (Cs) calling on Spanish authorities to enact legal reforms to depoliticise judicial bodies, where judges and magistrates elect their own representatives, in line with European standards.  We urge the EU to ensure Spain complies with European recommendations on judicial independence.

Judicial independence is vital to the rule of law and democracy. Political control over the General Council of the Judiciary undermines impartiality and public trust. Restoring a merit-based, self-governed system is essential to uphold European values.
