ALDE Party Statement on the Banning of Opposition Parties in Georgia

30 October 2025 by
ALDE Party, ALDE Party Communications

ALDE Party is deeply concerned and condemns the initiative of the Georgian Dream party that it will ask the Constitutional Court to ban opposition parties, including Lelo - Strong Georgia, a member of the ALDE Party.

These are the words and actions of authoritarian regimes, not democratic countries that genuinely want to be part of the European Union.

We shall keep a close eye on the proceedings of the complaint initiated by Lelo - Strong Georgia before the Constitutional Court of Georgia. Failure to defend constitutional principles will be another demonstration of judicial capture by the Georgian Dream.

So we repeat our call to stop the backsliding.

Release all the political prisoners including our ALDE leaders Zurab Girchi Japaridze, Giorgi Vashadze, Elene Khoshtaria, and journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli.

Organise new, free and fair parliamentary elections, under a neutral administration, democratic electoral law, in a climate free of intimidation.

Stop ignoring and cracking down on your own people who continue to protest on the streets of Tbilisi and across the country.

Make a better choice than barring citizens’ political participation and moving yet another step closer to a one-party dictatorship.

ALDE Party will continue to steadfastly stand by its member parties and all those that seek a pro-European and democratic future for their country.
