ALDE Party warmly welcomes the landmark outcome of Moldova’s parliamentary elections on 28 September. The pro-European vote prevailed by a landslide, signaling the country’s resolve to continue upon the EU accession path.
The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), founded by President Maia Sandu, garnered just over 50% of votes, translating into 55 out of 101 seats and securing an absolute majority in Parliament. While other parties entered the legislature as well, the dominance of the pro-EU force is unmistakable.
This electoral outcome is all the more remarkable given the adversarial context. Observers and civil society reported intense Russian interference, disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, illegal funding, vote-buying attempts and intimidation. Despite this, Moldovan voters demonstrated great resilience and a clear will to defend their democratic choice.
For ALDE Party, this victory underscores two imperatives: the importance of continued support for Moldova’s institutional reforms and an unwavering commitment to the principle that Moldova belongs in the European Union.
The path ahead will not be without challenges. However, Sunday’s result provides a strengthened mandate for pro-Europeanism and a clearer signal to the EU and its partners that Moldova’s citizens choose European integration over Russian influence.
ALDE Party reaffirms its commitment to stand with Moldova on its European path, as highlighted by ALDE Party Vice-President Dan Barna MEP.
“Despite Russia's campaign of hybrid warfare, disinformation & even fake bomb threats at polling stations, the people of Moldova have spoken clearly."
"They chose democracy. They chose Europe. A powerful rebuke to Kremlin interference and a massive win for a free Moldova,” he said, commenting on the election result.
