We are deeply saddened by the passing of Colette Flesch, the third ALDE Party President (1985–1990) and the first woman to lead our party, who passed away at the age of 89.
Her career embodied the values that define our political family: freedom, equality and a deep commitment to the European project.
A committed liberal, Flesch was a pioneer in advancing women’s representation in politics and strengthening democratic institutions. Her liberal leadership helped to shape a more united liberal Europe amid a crucial period of European integration.
As a leading member of Luxembourg’s Democratic Party, she served multiple terms nationally and the European Parliament. She was the first woman elected Mayor of the City of Luxembourg and held senior government positions, including Vice-Prime Minister and as a government minister.
Flesch also served as a Director-General at the European Commission, contributing to culture and policy, as well as reinforcing the link between European institutions and citizens. Her legislative legacy includes major liberal reforms in the areas of human rights, women’s rights and civil liberties.
The ALDE Party honours Colette Flesch’s remarkable contribution to European liberalism. Her courage and leadership continue to inspire liberals across Europe. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and all those who had the privilege of working alongside her.
