Last week, ALDE Party member Liberal Democrats came together in York for their Spring Conference, where new policies were passed ahead of May’s elections.

In his keynote speech, leader Ed Davey showcased how to protect liberal values from the destructive forces of populism:

“We have to save the United Kingdom we love from the triple threat of Nigel Farage, Donald Trump and Elon Musk. In that landscape, the Liberal Democrats are not just important – we are essential. We are the party of hope. The party that believes the best of Britain rather than the worst. The party that says: yes, things are hard, and the problems are real – but we can fix them, together.”

Davey outlined a bold call for a modern Magna Carta, proposing a written constitution to safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms that are under threat from populist agendas that could reshape Britain along the lines of Trump’s America.

With rising global tensions, Davey highlighted the need for stronger armed forces and unified alliances with key international partners. As global stability is under threat, national security is a huge priority to ensure independence.

Helen Morgan MP reflected on a strong year of electoral achievements, while others highlighted recent parliamentary accomplishments. The May elections were framed as a historic opportunity to defend and promote liberal values, standing up to challenges both at home and abroad.

Party President Josh Babarinde reminded attendees of the enduring importance of liberalism. In a time of increasing division, the Liberal Democrats stand as an alternative to fear-driven politics, promoting fairness, openness and decency.

Throughout the Conference, the party emphasised the choice facing the UK: between fear and hope. The message from the Spring Conference was clear: the Liberal Democrats choose hope.
