This week, liberal environment and energy ministers came together ahead of the Environmental Council (ENVI) to drive clear prioritities in key areas.

By focusing on what matters most for Europe’s sustainable future, liberals prioritised stronger EU cooperation in order to cut energy costs whilst also supporting a shift to clean and affordable mobility.

For liberals, a competitive path to the EU 2040 climate goals is essential. A key part of this is ensuring energy independence, which acts as a key facet of European economic resilience and security.

These priorities were already front and centre at the ENVI Council, with clean mobility and long-term climate action high on the agenda - exactly where liberals want them.

Among those participating in the pre-Council meeting were:

  • Andres Sutt, Minister of Energy and the Environment (Eesti Reformierakond, EE)
  • Stientje van Veldhoven-van der Meer, Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth (D66, NL)
  • Helena Dyrssen, State Secretary, Ministry of Climate and Enterprise (Liberalerna, SE)
  • Uroš Vajgl, State Secretary at Slovenia's Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy
  • Brigitte van den Berg MEP (D66, NL) Chair

The discussions mark a key step in Europe’s green transition, with new rules debated on CO₂ emissions for cars and vans, a key step in Europe’s green transition. The proposal keeps ambition high but adds flexibility for industry, which liberals align with.

Discussions also touched on the EU’s post-2030 climate plans. Following agreement on the 2040 target, ministers are now shaping the next wave of legislation. Liberal leaders are backing that vision. A greener Europe, but also a stronger, more competitive one.
