On 24 June, ALDE Party member Liberalerna in Sweden elected Simona Mohamsson as its new party leader at an extraordinary party Congress.

Mohamsson, previously the party’s secretary general, was unanimously confirmed in the role by the 183 party members who gathered at the meeting on 24 June, after being nominated by the party’s electoral committee on 19 July.

She becomes the Swedish Liberal Party’s 14th party chair since its foundation in 1934.

“I am proud to have the members' trust to lead Sweden's Liberal Party - and I intend to manage it with full force. I will step forward, take responsibility, win trust and show why the Liberals are crucial for Sweden's future. Sweden is facing major challenges where liberal politics in a bourgeois government is the answer. To create a Sweden to believe in, we need to step up the work of getting the schools in order, stopping gangs and clearing out crooks from welfare,” said Mohamsson.

Mohamsson has a long background in the Liberal Party, having been a member of the party board since 2021, a former vice-chair of its youth wing LUF, and a candidate for the European elections in 2024.

“Simona is fearless, clear and well-rooted in the liberal movement. Our members have asked for a party leader who understands and has the power to renew our party. I and the election committee are convinced that Simona Mohamsson is that person,” said committee chair Lars Persson Skandevall.
