Liberals mark Pride amid growing backlash across Europe

Pride in 2026 remains a reminder that freedom and equality are never guaranteed. They must be defended, publicly and politically, every year.

Across Europe and throughout the month of June, liberals marked Pride Month, highlighting the simple but powerful message that everyone should be able to live and love openly without fear. At a time of rising political polarisation, visibility and solidarity remain essential.

Hate speech and discrimination against LGBTQIA+ communities continue to increase in many parts of Europe. Pride therefore functions not only as a celebration, but as a visible act of resistance against intolerance.

The latest ILGA Rainbow Map underlines this reality. While some progress has been made, too many countries across Europe still fall short on basic protections for LGBTQIA+ people. From so-called “LGBT-free zones” to conversion therapy practices and discriminatory blood donation rules, the gaps remain evident.

More than one in three LGBTQIA+ people in Europe still report experiencing discrimination. Pride keeps that reality visible and ensures equality remains a political priority, not just a symbolic commitment.

Across the continent, liberal politicians and activists used Pride weekend to reaffirm that progress is possible and necessary, but not guaranteed.
