Ahead of the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin taking place in Alaska today, ALDE Party, Liberal International, ALDE-PACE and LYMEC reaffirm their unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
We welcome diplomatic efforts, including those led by the United States, to end the war and secure a just and lasting peace that respects international law and safeguards Ukraine’s and Europe’s security. Any negotiations must include Ukraine as a full participant, begin with an end to hostilities, and provide credible security guarantees, including its right to choose its alliances.
There can be no reward for aggression and no compromise on freedom, democracy, or the rule of law. If Russia continues its aggression, the international community must maintain and, if needed, increase political, economic, and restrictive measures.
Europe’s liberals stand united with Ukraine and together with our partners we will continue providing political, economic, humanitarian, and military support to Ukraine, and upholding sanctions until Russia fully respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
