On 23 June, the Council of the European Union appointed Kajsa Ollongren (D66, NL) as the EU’s new Special Representative (EUSR) for human rights.
Formerly the Netherlands’ Minister of the Interior and Minister of Defence, Ollongren has extensive national experience across a wide range of positions.
In her new role, she will contribute to the implementation of the EU’s policy on human rights, positions on promoting compliance with international humanitarian law and support for international criminal justice.
Furthermore, she will help establish a stronger European voice through dialogues on human rights with governments in third countries and international and regional organisations, as well as with civil society and other relevant actors.
“The importance of human rights, democracy and the rule of law is most visible when absent. I am honored to champion these universal values on behalf of the European Union. Our collective mission to safeguard human rights worldwide is now more vital than ever. It is the foundation of humanity and lasting peace,” said Ollongren.
Reporting to Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ollongren is one of 11 EUSRs currently supporting the work of the European External Action Service.
EUSRs promote the EU's policies and interests in certain regions and countries and play an active role in efforts to consolidate reforms, stability and the rule of law.
