On 9 May, citizens across the European Union celebrated Europe Day, a day dedicated to the ideals of peace and unity that underpin the European project.

Members of Renew Europe in the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) joined celebrations across the continent, highlighting the diversity and richness of European culture.

Samo Turel, Mayor of Nova Gorica in Slovenia, hosted other Renew Europe CoR members for festivities in the town which has been named a European Capital of Culture in 2025.

Nova Gorica, alongside its twin city of Gorizia in Italy, stand as the first-ever European Borderless Capital of Culture, a powerful testament to cross-border cooperation and the unifying power of culture.

“We have started the empowerment of people, that really want to work together. The main change that I wish to happen, that already is happening, is that the concept of borders will be forgotten. We will live cherishing the past and history, while looking forward and promoting how united we now are,” said Turel.

On Europe Day, Renew Europe CoR members reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the European project, ensuring it remains a force for good in a rapidly changing world.

In Brussels, the Group joined the Committee of the Regions’ traditional Open Doors Day, where visitors had the opportunity to engage with several interactive stands and learn about the CoR’s role in shaping EU legislation.
