Ahead of last week’s meeting of EU environment ministers, Renew Europe called on all Member States to show unity and leadership by agreeing on a science-based 2040 climate target and a strong European position for COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Renew Europe reiterates its call for a binding 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, in full alignment with the European Climate Law and the recommendations of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change.

Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy MEP (D66, NL), Renew Europe Vice-President and shadow rapporteur on the Climate Law proposal, underlined the importance of decisive action:

“Europe’s leadership is at stake. Climate action is not a burden, but an opportunity to boost competitiveness, reduce energy costs and build a resilient, independent economy. The Draghi report made clear that Europe’s prosperity depends on investing in the industries of the future, not defending the past. A bold 2040 target is essential to achieving this vision.”

Emma Wiesner MEP (Centerpartiet, SE), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur on the European Parliament COP30 resolution, stressed that the credibility of the European Union is now on the line:

“The world is watching Europe. The decision of environment ministers will determine whether we continue to lead the implementation of the Paris Agreement or fall behind. Ministers must base their decision on science and act with courage. This is about protecting people from climate disasters, providing clean and affordable energy for households, creating jobs in emerging industries, and ensuring energy security that frees us from dependence on Russian fuels. We must move beyond the fossil-fuelled economies of the past and build the sustainable economy of the future.”

Renew Europe remains committed to forming a strong, pro-European alliance to secure a binding 90 percent emissions reduction by 2040. This target is essential to keep global warming below 1.5 °C and to strengthen Europe’s energy independence. The target also ensures lower energy costs and lasting prosperity for future generations.
