USR charts its path back to government in Romania
ALDE Party, Aoife Devereux

USR (ALDE Party member) is preparing for its next political chapter. At its electoral Congress in Timișoara last weekend, the party brought together around 600 delegates to elect a new National Bureau and define its direction after entering opposition.

Party leader Dominic Fritz delivered a clear message: USR wants to return to government, but as part of a democratic, reformist alternative without the Social Democratic Party (PSD) or the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR).

“Our goal is clear: a government for Romania without PSD and AUR,” Fritz said, setting out the political objective that will guide the party over the next three years.

A new team takes shape:

Two-thirds of USR’s National Bureau members are newly elected, marking a significant renewal of the party’s leadership. Fritz will continue as president for the remainder of his mandate, working alongside the new Bureau and seven vice-presidents. The Congress also elected 24 members to the National Council – the party’s next level governing body.

Cristian Seidler secured the highest number of votes among the Vice-Presidential candidates, followed by Diana Buzoianu, Iulian Lorincz, Dan Barna, Radu Mihaiu, Irineu Darău and Diana Stoica. The seven vice-presidents bring representation from across Romania into the party’s leadership.

Delegates also adopted the political resolution We Get Things Done. We Keep Our Word, setting out USR’s priorities in opposition and its vision for a future government.

A reformist alternative:

USR’s resolution sets out a clear approach to its new role: to be a “fierce, yet constructive” opposition. The party intends to defend reforms introduced by its former ministers, scrutinise the PSD-led government and hold those in power accountable.

At the same time, USR wants to build a broader reformist alternative, remaining open to cooperation with the National Liberal Party (PNL), a part of the European People’s Party, and reaching out to communities across Romania where the party’s influence has been less strong.

Radu Miruță said: “USR will win the election by reaching the doors of people who didn't vote for us because they've never seen us. It is our duty to go from door to door and explain to people the truth, to explain to them how we have managed to change things in the year of government and how much room there is to improve.”

With its leadership renewed and its priorities set, USR is now focused on rebuilding its national reach and making the case for a different kind of government.
