The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party (ALDE Party) is the European liberal party composed of more than 60 member parties from more than 30 European countries. Its members share the common belief that freedom is key to the development of the individual and is core to the protection of civil liberties and free markets. ALDE Party works with its members throughout Europe to strengthen liberal democrat parties and policies and to engage effectively with European citizens.

The Brussels-based Secretariat supports the activities of the ALDE Party, organizes its meetings, manages its external communication, provides strategic consultancy and organizational development, facilitates European policy development and networking amongst liberal parties.

Policy officer (m/f)

JOB BACKGROUND

The policy officer will join the Policy & Membership Affairs Unit which is responsible for the ALDE Party’s policy and membership development. We facilitate the exchange of policy ideas and best practices among member parties, draft positions and shape and promote the ALDE Party’s narrative, presence, and influence on the European stage.

The unit serves to create a favourable pathway for European Liberals to continue growing with a view towards the next European Parliament elections in 2024, provide research and insights for our member parties at local, national and European level.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate the work of the ALDE Party Bureau’s policy advisory groups on Jobs, Growth & Innovation and as needed provide support for other policy groups, notably on Democracy & Security. The advisory groups are composed of representatives from ALDE member parties and key stakeholders within the ALDE network to develop liberal policy ideas and solutions to key topical issues facing the ALDE Party and its members.
  • Lead the political monitoring for selected European countries to enable the ALDE Party to stay on top of key political developments impacting its members and the party. This work includes advising the Head of Unit, the Secretary General and the ALDE Party Bureau on potential responses and actions needed to support the current ALDE Party membership and its future growth.
  • Contribute to increasing the visibility the of ALDE Party and the politicisation of its communications by providing relevant content for and collaborate with the communications unit on the countries and policy areas covered by the policy officer.
  • Support the Head of Unit and other team members on keeping the ALDE Party Bureau, secretary General and presidency up to date on key policy developments, including as needed preparation of briefings and external communication pieces on policy areas and countries covered by the policy officer.
  • Support the Head of Unit and relevant team members in the organisation of statutory events, notably Congress and Council, as relates to the organisation of political debates and the work relating to the adoption of resolutions.
  • Contribute to the development of a narrative and manifesto ahead of the European Parliament elections in 2024.

REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree (master level) in political and social sciences or equivalent
  • 3-4 years fulltime experience working on public policy analysis and formulation, particularly around economic, single market and trade related issues. Knowledge of other policy areas, notably security incl. cyber security, home affairs, immigration and asylum, at European, national or international level an advantage.
  • A deep understanding of European politics and party politics, including a strong political acumen. Prior experience working in a liberal political setting at European or national level is desirable.
  • Project management skills and a strong analytical mind with ability to easily derive key political content needed to develop strategy and action items.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to turn complex issues into short and concise political messages.
  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken), knowledge of a second language is an advantage.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment is an asset.

The ALDE Party is a registered European Political Party and its staff is working in the frame of employee contracts submitted to Belgian Law.
