Today, March 25, is Freedom Day in Belarus. But there is little freedom under a regime when your democratic voice is not heard, when you can be arrested for displaying a red and white flag, and when opposing voices and leading politicians are arrested, tortured, or forced to leave their homeland.
This is why today, we stand in solidarity with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and with Belarusian citizens on Freedom Day.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Belarus who risk their lives to bravely protest for their rights and freedoms to be respected.
We stand in solidarity with all those who believe it is high time for new free, fair and democratic elections to be organised in Belarus.
We European Liberals have been standing up for democracy and protection of fundamental rights and freedoms ever since our foundation and we will continue to do so. Our MEPs in the European Parliament played a key role in the resolution on Belarus, which explicitly supports the Belarusian protesters and demands new, free and fair elections in accordance with international standards.
