ALDE Council meeting held in connection with virtual Congress

The ALDE Party Council meeting was held in connection with the virtual eCongress on 11 June 2021.

During the Council meeting, the participants discussed membership developments and electoral updates, among others. ALDE Party member Liberálisok (Hungary) transitioned from affiliate to full membership.

The Conference on the Future of Europe (COFOE) was also discussed during the Council meeting, with participation of Guy Verhofstadt MEP, who is the European Parliament Co-Chair of the Executive Board for COFOE, and Antoaneta Asenova, President of LYMEC.

“The Conference on the Future of Europe is absolutely necessary. Every time there is a crisis, you see there is action by Europe. But in many cases we are too weak, too late with our reaction,” Verhofstadt addressed the attendees.

"The European Union isn't fit for the 21st century, we need a number of reforms. This is why the Conference on the Future of Europe is organised," Verhofstadt said and highlighted that instead of making it an exercise from top to bottom, European citizens have the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas as part of this unique process.

"The Conference is not just a listening exercise, it is different because we also want to formulate policy proposals and structural changes to bring citizens' proposals to live," Verhofstadt highlighted.

“What do young people want? […] What we want is ambition, we want change. [...] We wish to see a Union that is ready to act, and to act quickly,” Asenova highlighted in her contribution, and expressed her wish for an honest conversation on what is working and what is not.

"The EU institutions have been in need of a profound reform for more than a decade. Europe is more fit for the 20th than for the 21st Century," Asenova said and continued: "We know change is scary but what is scarier than change is the knowledge of missing an opportunity."
