Following recent developments in Spain, ALDE Party Co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP said:
“We are deeply concerned about the recent agreement signed by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), concerning the provisions of the amnesty law and the parliamentary investigation of independent judicial decisions.
"The agreement risks a breach of the rule of law and could undermine the autonomy of the judiciary. Prioritising political wins over upholding legal institutions could set a dangerous trend, allowing politics to sway legal matters eroding the essential balance of powers necessary for a functioning democracy.
"Sacrificing rule of law and division of power in exchange for votes to secure a government is unacceptable and demands action from the European institutions.
"Upholding the rule of law and an independent judiciary are non-negotiable in our European democracy. European liberals stand firm in their unwavering commitment to defend the rule of law.”
As we stand firm against breaches in the rule of law in Poland and Hungary, we must apply the same scrutiny across Europe.

The recent developments in Spain, following @PSOE's agreement, also pose a threat to the rule of law.
