ALDE Party marks 48 years of liberal accomplishments

On 26 March, European liberals celebrated their 48th birthday, marking nearly five decades of the fight for individual rights and freedoms across the continent.

In 1976, European liberals and democrats signed our founding document, the Stuttgart declaration, creating a liberal political family uniting 14 parties in the European Parliament and in European Economic Community member states.

With the creation of the European Union in 1993, we established even further to form a true European political party, fighting every day for citizens’ rights and freedoms.

Whatever our name, from the European Liberal Democrats and Reformists to the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, our growing family continues to lead the charge on European and national soil as the main promoter of liberal values.

Today, we can count numerous leaders in our ranks, including Prime Ministers, European Commissioners, national Ministers, Members of European and national Parliaments and city Mayors.

Our political project is more alive than it has ever been: at our Extraordinary Congress in Brussels earlier in March, member parties agreed to sign a liberal Charter of Values, updating the remit of the Stuttgart declaration.

The Charter of Values establishes a common standpoint on the heritage, vision and essence of European liberalism, reaffirming the liberal commitment to defend and promote some of the most defining issues of our generation as part of an equal, open and democratic society.

You can read the Charter of Values in full here.

To mark the day, staff from the ALDE Party Secretariat joined partners from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for a walk in Brussels’ Parc Cinquantenaire as part of the Run for the European Elections campaign.

ALDE Party also sent a floral gift to member parties across the European Union as a token of appreciation and a reminder of the work yet to be done before the upcoming European elections and beyond.
