Given the recent developments in Belarus, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen has issued the following statement:

"After days of protests in Minsk where people have been peacefully calling for change, the time of President Alexander Lukashenko to resign has come. It is time to end the last dictatorship in Europe. Lukashenko has managed to secure 26 years in power through harsh repression.

Lukashenko's Presidency can not be recognized. Russia should not intervene, but should allow Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and the democratic opposition to organize free and fair elections."
