Andrija Popović re-elected to Montenegrin parliament

With parliamentary elections taking place in Montenegro on 30 August, leader of ALDE member the Liberal party of Montenegro, Andrija Popović, was re-elected as a member of parliament. The party run in coalition with the governing party, the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS).

ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen congratulated Popović on his re-election and expressed his wish for the new government of Montenegro to stay a close ally of the European Union.

“Congratulations to Andrija Popović MP, leader of the Liberal Party of Montenegro, on his re-election to Parliament yesterday. I hope that a new coalition government will secure the pro-European and pro-Atlantic position of Montenegro,” van Baalen said.

It is not yet clear which parties will lead the new government, as the election results were a close call. The governing party DPS won 30 seats with 35,12% of the vote, and with the support of smaller parties it will gain 40 seats out of 81. While three opposition blocks joined forces during the election, it remains to be seen whether they can establish a successful coalition agreement.
