On 25 April, Italian and Portuguese liberals joined celebrations around their respective liberation from a long-lasting dictatorship and the end of the war.
Portugal celebrated the Carnation Revolution (Revolução dos Cravos), which in 1974 peacefully overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime after decades of dictatorship.
The revolution was led mainly by young military officers and was remarkable for its almost bloodless nature, as civilians placed carnations in the soldiers' rifle barrels, symbolizing hope and nonviolence.
ALDE Party member Iniciativa Liberal took to the streets to mark the restoration of democracy in Portugal and the beginning of major political and social reforms.
“A new generation is being formed to deepen the values of democracy and freedom. We have the whole future ahead of us,” said an Iniciativa Liberal statement.
Meanwhile, Italy’s Liberation Day (Festa della Liberazione) marks the anniversary of the country’s liberation from Nazi occupation and Fascist rule at the end of World War II in 1945.
It honours the efforts of the Italian Resistance movement, the partisans, and all those who fought for freedom and democracy.
During the national holiday, ALDE Party members Azione, Più Europa and Radicali Italiani joined various ceremonies, marches, and events as they vowed to carry on the legacy of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for Italy’s liberation.
