On 14 June, ALDE Party member Democratic Alignment (DEPA) in Cyprus held a party Congress to unveil its new political programme ahead of parliamentary elections in 2026.

DEPA Vice-Presidents Antigoni Papadopoulou, Marinos Kleanthous and Yiannos Lakkotrypis presented the updated document, fruit of months of consultations with party members and wider civil society.

DEPA elaborated a set of political priorities in 10 key areas, including the health sector, housing, immigration, childcare, pension schemes, social security and local governments.

Party leader Marios Garoyian made a plea to Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, in attendance at the Congress, to convene special meetings of the country’s political forces and relevant social actors to agree on how to address critical issues that concern Cypriot society.

“Only through understanding, cooperation and collective responsibility will we be able to regain the trust of our citizens, give hope to the new generation and restore the credibility of our political system and institutions. The Democratic Party extends the hand of cooperation - not out of weakness, but out of a high sense of responsibility towards the country, society and the new generation,” said Garoyian.

During his speech, President Christodoulides recognised DEPA's stamp on the government programme, and acknowledged DEPA implemented various legislative proposals in the sectors of health, housing, immigration and social benefits.

“I am here as a collaborator, as a partner and as a fellow traveller, in the great effort to bring better days to our country and our people, without hidden agendas, without expediency, without serving any interests. And in this great effort, your contribution is important, it is decisive, it is necessary and essential. DEPA is distinguished for the clarity of its political discourse, for its realistic approach to issues, for its sober political discourse, far from extremes and tensions,” he said.
