On 27 April, Carole Hartmann was elected as the new President of ALDE Party member Demokratesch Partei (DP).

Party members gathered at a party Congress in Luxembourg which marked the party’s 70th year of political activity, centred around the slogan “Because it's about tomorrow”.

Hartmann, who has been serving as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2018 and Mayor of Echternach since 2023, was previously the party’s Secretary General.

Over 95% of DP members voted for the 37-year-old lawyer to take over the party’s political leadership from Lex Delles, Luxembourg’s Minister for Economy.

Meanwhile, Ministers Yuriko Backes (Defence, Gender Equality and Diversity, Mobility and Public Works) and Eric Thill (Culture) were respectively elected as the party’s first Vice-President and Secretary General.

In her acceptance speech, Hartmann vowed to maintain the DP's social-liberal orientation, continuing to pursue a clearly pro-European, progressive and sustainable policy in dialogue with social partners.

“The DP – as a party of the centre – would also have the responsibility to guarantee the democratic freedoms and equal opportunities for all people in the country. Also, and above all, to secure the future of future generations, because tomorrow is what matters,” said Hartmann.
