On 27 April, NEOS scored its best-ever result in the Vienna regional election and is set to continue governing in the Austrian capital as a junior partner.
Austrian liberals increased their support to 10% of the popular vote and secured 10 seats in Vienna’s City Council, two more than the last election in 2020.
NEOS will negotiate to form a new government with the social democrats, after five highly successful years where 97% of announced projects in the government programme were implemented.
NEOS Secretary General Douglas Hoyos celebrated the electoral success, pointing out that real progress in the field of education can now be achieved with the help of federal Minister for Education Christoph Wiederkehr.
“The result is confirmation that we should continue on our course, push for reforms and continue to play an active role in shaping the future - in Vienna and in the federal government. It's good when NEOS govern, and it's good when someone makes honest policies and pushes for reforms - even if these reforms take time,” said Hoyos.
“Many thanks to all the Viennese people who appreciate our constructive and honest work so much. We are ready to tackle further challenges and want to continue the good cooperation in the progressive coalition to make Vienna even better. We want to build on the work we have started in the education and integration sectors,” said NEOS Wien.
The campaign was led by Bettina Emmerling, Vienna’s Deputy Mayor, and Selma Arapović, chair of NEOS’ Wien branch and lead candidate for the local election, both graduates of the Alliance Of Her Academy.
