Greenland: Europe must stay strong in face of US coercion

In recent weeks, Europe has witnessed threats from the United States regarding Greenland’s sovereignty. These attempts to intimidate and coerce democratic partners and allies undermine the rules-based international order and signal a worrying shift in global politics.

Greenland is not just a strategic Arctic territory – it is home to people who have a right to self-determination. Decisions about its future belong to Greenlanders themselves, in partnership with Denmark.

Europe must not tolerate blackmail that forces retreat from a global system built on international law. Real allies respect each other’s sovereignty. A confident Europe must respond with unity and consider all instruments available, such as counter-tariffs and the Anti-Coercion Instrument, which can be used when political and economic pressures threaten European interests or decision-making.

European and liberal leaders have expressed unequivocal support to Greenland and Denmark and call for a stronger and united Europe capable to push back against coercion.
