On 25 June, ALDE Party President Svenja Hahn co-hosted leaders from across the EU and beyond at the Renew Europe Leaders’ Summit in Brussels.
The high-level meeting gathered heads of state and government, European Commissioners, national party leaders, MEPs and more political heavyweights belonging to the Renew Europe political family.
The event was opened by a Plenary session where leaders discussed our political family’s vision and role for the upcoming years, embracing both European and international perspectives.
“Our task is to make clear what Europe can be, and that is to make the EU a diplomatic superpower– because it’s about the survival of our democracy. Now is our time to take over the torch of freedom from the United States. We are the defenders of democracy, freedom and peace. It is up to us liberals to form a vision, to come with ideas and to shape the European Union and the Europe we believe in,” said President Hahn.
The day continued with a caucus between Renew Europe’s national party leaders while our EU Commissioners Marta Kos and Hadja Lahbib led roundtables to discuss urgent challenges facing the EU, such as crisis response, enlargement and the rule of law.
Finally, leaders co-signed a declaration named “Freedom on the Offensive”, under three pillars – Freedom to Act, Freedom to Choose, and Freedom to Grow.
Our political family to building a sovereign European Defence Union, activating Article 7 of the Treaty on the European Union against Viktor Orbán, and strengthening a competitive and green European Single Market.
“Liberal democracy works. It has a proven record. When free people work freely together, all have an opportunity to prosper. When European countries work closely together, they can take their future in their own hands. European unification has done so much for freedom in the past. It is the most successful liberal democratic project in history. It can achieve even more,” says the document.
