On 23 June, ALDE Party member USR entered a new coalition government in Romania with four ministers who will ensure Romania follows its pro-reform and pro-European path.
Romanian liberals will take charge of the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economy and Digitalisation and Ministry of Environment, four critical areas for the country’s priorities and those of the EU.
During a Congress on 21 June, members confirmed interim leader Dominic Fritz as USR President, who presented the party’s ten priorities for the incoming government as well as the incoming Ministers:
- Ionuț Moșteanu, Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister
- Oana Țoiu, Minister of Foreign Affairs
- Radu Miruță, Minister of Economy and Digitalisation
- Diana Buzoianu, Minister of Environment
USR is the only party represented by women in the ministerial cabinet, holding the government's only two female ministerial posts.
“We are taking office to make the reforms that our country urgently needs. To cut unjust privileges, to stop the waste of public money, to put an end to patronage appointments, to eliminate the injustices that Romanians feel at the hands of state institutions. Our objective is to rebuild a leaner state that respects public money and puts citizens' interests first. We are ready to build seriously, with responsibility, with hope,” said Fritz.
The so-called “Mauritius” government will have the mission to reduce Romania’s budget deficit, the highest of any EU Member State, and enable the country to return as a key player in shaping a prosperous and peaceful future in Europe.
USR’s participation in the government stands as a guarantee that tough, but necessary reforms will be implemented and that liberal principles and values are respected.
