Regional and local elections in Spain were held on 26 May. In the region of Madrid, ALDE Party member Ciudadanos successfully emerged as the third force after obtaining almost 20% of the vote share that translates into 26 seats.
On 14 August, following a series of negotiations, Ciudadanos and the centre-right Partido Popular (PP) reached an agreement to form a government in Madrid. This is the first time in the history of the region that a coalition government is formed and shows the disruption to the traditional bipartisan system and the consolidation of a liberal party in the region.
In the new government, Ciudadanos will hold the Vice-Presidency and six ministries:
