On Saturday 13 November, D66, one of ALDE Party’s members in The Netherlands, held its 114th Congress online.
In her speech to the Congress, Party Leader Sigrid Kaag, stated her strong belief in The Netherlands as a country and on D66 to continue building a better future:
“I believe in a Netherlands that strives, and that dares to think and act big for a promising future for everyone. From our own strength, from the connection with each other and from the community that we form with each other.”
She also shared insights on the party’s position in the ongoing government negotiations:
“In the national interest, we have taken our responsibility to break the deadlock and start negotiations. The progressive impetus we stand for will now have to prove itself in a progressive coalition agreement.”
During the Congress, internal elections took place to choose the party’s new National Board. Sigrid Kaag was re-elected as the Party Leader. Maartje Jansen, who has been an active member of D66 for more than 8 years and who worked as Head of its International Desk from 2009-2013, was elected new International Secretary. Nadia Arsieni, who currently works for the Ministry of Justice optimising management, cooperation and processes within the asylum system, was chosen to be the party’s new Political Secretary.
The Congress also discussed and passed motions on key topics such as housing, education, economy, climate and security.

“In het landsbelang hebben wij onze verantwoordelijk genomen om de impasse te doorbreken en te gaan onderhandelen. Het progressieve elan waar wij voor staan zal zich nu moeten bewijzen in een vooruitstrevend coalitieakkoord.”
