The ALDE Party Secretariat has the pleasure to inform you about an upcoming vote to elect the delegates of Individual Membership to the next ALDE Congress. The 38th ALDE Congress - scheduled to be held from 8-10 November in Madrid, Spain - will adopt the manifesto for the 2019 European elections, and is a key moment for Liberals and Democrats from around Europe to unite.
You can go as an individual member to the Congress, but if you really want to make the difference, you can try and become an individual member delegate. Each year, individual members elect their delegates to the ALDE Congress. This year, to allow more members the chance to vote and for the delegates to have more time to prepare their work ahead of the ALDE Congress, the vote to elect the delegates will take place at the end of June.
Below you can read all the details of the vote and who can vote, how to become a candidate and what a delegate is supposed to do.
The vote to elect the Congress delegates:
Who can vote? All members who are up-to-date with paying their membership fee can vote. If you are not yet up-to-date, you will receive a reminder at the start of June.
According to the individual member rules, the number of members who on 1 July are up-to-date with their payment will determine the number of delegates. Therefore, the more members who are up-to-date with paying their membership fee, the more delegates individual members can send to the ALDE Congress. Last year, individual members sent 3 delegates to the ALDE Congress.
You may realise that the vote will open before the exact number of delegates is determined. However, the vote will close, and the results shall be announced on 2 July, after the deadline of 1 July. As last year, those candidates with most votes will be elected.
How to become a candidate?
All members who are up-to-date with paying their membership fee can nominate. If you are not yet up-to-date, you will receive a reminder at the start of June.
You can nominate yourself until Monday 18 June at 12h00 CET. To nominate send an e-mail to [email protected] with your name, a short motivation (max. 40 words) and a picture (as a separate file, attached). Nominees need to have knowledge of the English language.
Nominees need three other individual members to endorse their nomination. The endorsers should also send a message to [email protected] by 18 June.
What is a delegate supposed to do?
Ahead of the Congress, the delegates submit resolutions and amendments, which are drafted in a democratic and collective process. During the Congress, they have the right to take part in the meetings of the Congress and to voice their opinion in plenary and have the right to vote. According to the rules, delegates are expected to closely coordinate resolutions, amendments and voting decisions with the members of the Steering Committee.
