Italian liberals gather at Più Europa Convention

On 24 February, Più Europa held a party Convention in Rome, gathering several leaders from the Italian political landscape.

During the event, party leaders launched a call to establish a joint liberal and democratic electoral list for the European elections on 9 June.

Più Europa wants to make the federalisation the European Union into the United States of Europe a real political objective and block the rise of nationalist right-wing parties in Italy.

"Europe is a dream of a few, it will become a need of many and eventually a necessity of all. This is the beginning of our rapid march towards a United States of Europe: without a more united Europe we are dead,” said Più Europa leader Emma Bonino.

"Our proposal of a united list for the United States of Europe means putting forward a bigger objective which allows us to unite our specificities and enhance them. We must defy unpopularity and put ourselves in a position to open a new chapter,” said party secretary Riccardo Magi.

The Convention saw strong attendance from other leaders of ALDE Party members including Azione leader Carlo Calenda, libdem europei President Andrea Marcucci and Radicali Italiani secretary Matteo Hallissey.

“The United States of Europe is an objective but today, it means only one thing: ammunition for Ukraine. If we don't stop Putin there will be no Europe to unite. This is not just a political battle, it’s a cultural one: we will be there for it and for many others,” said Calenda.

"The goal of the United States of Europe should be to give young people the opportunity to have a future in their own country. We must combine economic freedoms with civil rights for a liberal revolution, which has nothing to do with conservative and reactionary ideas,” said Hallissey.

“Enough reasoning based on individual success, let's think about Europe and make a list for the United States of Europe. A list uniting all liberal democrats and reformists for the upcoming European elections,” said Marcucci.

On the same day, libdem europei held a party Assembly, where members adopted a motion calling for the party to support a potential united list of political parties belonging to the Renew Europe group.

Italy will hold European elections on 8-9 June, as citizens will head to the polls to elect 76 MEPs.
